Final Three Artist Concepts Selected …

Residents of Tamborine were encouraged to come along to Tamborine Memorial Hall on Friday 2 June to view the concept designs and models, talk to the artists, and vote for their preferred choice for the Tamborine Gateway Sculpture. A council officer was in attendance all day with a community consultation meeting held in the evening.

Nine artists originally submitted concepts and images with inspiration drawn from a previously supplied brief. Three artists were selected for the final phase of public consultation: Armsign, Chris Totter, and Colleen Lavender.

  1. Armsign’s vision for the Middle Park public art project is to create a visually striking statement that both captures the attention and imagination of visitors, whilst providing a landmark of significance, valued by and representative of the local community. Their concept involves a series of shapes consisting of Scroll, Leaf, and Totem structures, designed to create a multi-layered and interactive artwork positioned in a way that creates intrigue and is visually arresting, welcoming motorists to the Scenic Rim.
  2. Chris Totter’s ‘Horsepower’ will re-imagine local historic objects into a dynamic contemporary artwork inspired by steam, farm power and the landscape. The body of the artwork will include re-purposed vintage organic shaped farming machinery and implements used about the region with some objects over 100 years old including horse drawn buggy steps, a vintage tractor seat, a beautifully cast railway headlight, and a large vintage stationery engine sourced within the Scenic Rim. The artwork will be engaging on many levels with multiple layers of discovery and elements of hidden gems of nature such as a native Kookaburra/Kingfisher nestling amongst the metal.
  3. Colleen Lavender provided two design concepts for Middle Park, both including horses. Horses, horsemanship, and the community were a mainstay in Colleen’s life in Tamborine, a rich tapestry of great people, working with the animals and fun. When creating designs for the Middle Park artworks, the memories of her time in this community informed the ideas for the sculptures an uplifting image as you enter the Scenic Rim.
