BMX Success In National Comp …

Ryder Wood from Tamborine Wins 2nd Place in BMX National Championships

In November 2020, AusCycling was formed through the amalgamation of Mountain Bike Australia, BMX Australia, and Cycling Australia. The organisation currently represents over 400 cycling clubs with 54,000 members to create one of largest cycling communities across Australia – from grassroots to high performance!
In March, the 2023 AusCycling BMX Freestyle National Championships was held at the Gold Coast Sports Precinct with entrants from all ages competing. The Junior Competition included competitors as young as 3 year old Noah Martin – son of Gold Medal Winner Olympic Champion Logan Martin (who also competed in the Elites section of the Championships) – delighting onlookers with his ‘moves’.

The National Championships was Ryder Wood’s (from Tamborine) first competition and he placed 2nd in the Under 13 yo category.
Ryder began freestyle BMX riding only a year ago so was excited to be in the mix amongst other kids he had observed with amazing skills just one year earlier.
Up against competitors who have been riding for a long time, Ryder had no expectations, and with a steep learning curve to catch up – plus lots of nerves – he hoped just not to crash!
Ryder completed tricks like tailwhips, 360s, and backflips on a course 4-5 times taller than him in order to secure his place. In the final result he was very pleased with his win!
“To come second in Australia was a dream come true for me” Ryder said “It also gives me something to show that hard work pays off, I’m stoked!”
The result has also secured Ryder’s place in a training schedule for the next year which is the long lead up to the 2032 Olympics. Go Ryder!
