Councillor Jeff McConnell – Division 2 – Scenic Rim

These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

Well, how quick did 2021 go, its December already. This has now been my second year as a Councillor, and I can say I have found my feet. I am also happy with most responses by Council to issues that I have raised to to actioned. It’s not always easy when we have such a large area with a small number of staff however, they do a great job with limited resources.

The Councillors have decided that we would not renew the CEO’s contract and would put the position back out to market. This was not an easy decision, but I believe it is in the best long term benefit to the Council. I wish the CEO Mr Jon Gibbons all the best in the future.

BUDGET
2022/23 Budget discussions are about to start and they are always a great debate within the Councillors Chamber. It’s not easy trying to manage such a small budget (approx $100m) but a large area. I will always try and keep rates increases as low as possible.

COVID-19
COVID and the economy are still the biggest issues that I can see. Lockdowns due to COVID have severely impacted some of our small business especially the hospitality sector. The hypocrisy in the lockdown restrictions have been obvious with big business allowed to operate and
small businesses being forced to shut their doors. I hope that next year after opening the borders that small businesses can still operate but with suitable restrictions. If you listen to the Council Meeting 23 Nov, we discussed the upcoming QLD State Government Vaccine Mandates.

I oppose any mandate that restricts or removes the rights of any citizens to move freely or attend any business purely because you have not been vaccinated. This is a basic Human Right and is non-negotiable in my values.
We agreed to request that the State Government take urgent action to reassess the impacts and burdens this mandate places on the community and businesses. I am encouraging all residents, before the State Government opens the border, to start with a Healthy Living/Eating lifestyle that includes a good diet with lots of vitamins and minerals and please consult your doctor for more information.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
Lastly, I hope everyone has a safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year.
