‘Hill Mound’ Is Age Old Huegelkultur Practice

Participants of this month’s Huegelkultur Workshop learnt some new farming methods from an age old practice. Simply put Huegelkultur is German for ‘hill mound’. Held at The Green in Cedar Creek School the workshop run by Doreen Jackman from Bloomfield’s Farm, explored the benefits of how to direct rain water run off and utilise every drop.

The dirt mound built on the day was layered with organic materials like branches and compost to create healthier soil. In our current dry conditions many people are seeking new ways to grow produce and due to the interest these drought tolerant workshops are receiving, there will be a follow up ‘Water Harvesting’ workshop early next year.
