We hope October wasn’t too scary!!
Photos of Halloween celebration events will be in the following editions, but in the meantime we thought we would explore the origins of the increasingly popular festival.
Dating back 2,000 years ago to the ancient Celtic Festival of ‘Samhain’ (pronounced ‘Sow-In’) people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. The Celts lived in what is now known as Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, and celebrated their New Year on 1 November marking the end of summer and harvest time and the beginning of the cold, dark winter. This was a time of year often associated with human death and beliefs that ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Celts believed that on the night before the New Year on 31 October, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.
In the 9th century, the Church sanctioned 2 November to be ‘All Soul’s Day’, a day to honour the dead; the day before 1 November to be ‘All Saint’s Day’; and the night before on 31 October to be ‘All-Hallows Eve’ – eventually to be called ‘Halloween’. The festival was later adopted by the USA in the 19th century as immigrants fleeing the Irish Potato Famine arrived in America and helped popularise the celebration of Halloween by dressing up in costumes and going house-to-house asking for food or money – notably becoming today’s ‘trick or treat’ tradition.
Speaking of tricks and treats, bring on Friday 17 December, when fully vaccinated people can enter Queensland from a hotspot by air or road and don’t need to quarantine; and the removal of border restrictions and quarantine altogether for fully vaccinated people when Queensland hits the 90% fully vaccinated target rate. Stay safe and inspired, and hope everyone can give tribute for Remembrance Day.
